How to stay healthy during a pandemic

 The covid-19 pandemic has confined us to our homes. Because of altered work hours and other restrictions, having a healthy lifestyle is becoming a challenge. It’s a need of time to modify the current daily schedule to meet the demand of the body and attain good health. Even when you are working from home, you can maintain a healthy lifestyle using the below-mentioned tips.

#1: Remain physically active

A sedentary lifestyle doesn’t only make you fat but also causes many adverse health conditions. To gain good health, it is necessary to remain as much as active as possible. Due to the covid-19 restrictions, many indoor gyms are closed. Don’t make it an excuse to remain deskbound, and use the following methods to increase daily activities in life.

-          Take short breaks during your work; leave your desk for 4-5 minutes and do light exercises like stretching or walking in between your work hours. It enhances blood circulation to different body parts and eases muscles.

-          Use morning time to do strenuous exercises at home. Select a well-ventilated room of the house and use different sets of exercises like planks, squats, push-ups, etc. to keep your body in shape.

-          If it is allowed in your vicinity, visit a park to walk or run in the fresh air.

WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity in a week for adults. It’s the minimum you can do to have a healthy living. It is roughly around 22 minutes of being active daily, so divide your day accordingly.

#2: Have a healthy diet

A strong immune system means having a natural ability to fight covid-19 and other infections. One way to boost immunity is by eating healthy food every day. A healthy diet is full of nutrition and keeps the mind and body in good shape. Maintain a healthy diet by using these techniques:

-          Add a variety of food to your table every day; try using different colors method and increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables having different colors. Plants having dissimilar colors show unique nutrient compositions.

-          Use whole-grain foods like unprocessed maize, brown rice, etc. as they have more fibers to keep you healthy.

-          For snacks, munch on fresh fruits and vegetables and avoid junk or packaged food – you can fulfill your cravings by having a small bowl of unsalted nuts as well.

-          Use healthy fats and oils alternative like plant-based oil; also steam or boil food wherever possible to cut short your fat intake during the pandemic.

-          Go for low-fat dairy products.

-          Limit your sugar and salt intake.

-          Drink plenty of water every day to stay hydrated.

#3: Focus on mental health too

Having a sound mind is as important as having a sound body. Conditions like people being infected around and the development of new covid-19 strains are indeed stressful. Fear of contracting the disease, lack of physical contact with social circle, limited physical activities, and so much more are affecting mental health during the pandemic. To cope with this situation, use the following tips:

-          Maintain a daily routine even when you are working from home or unemployed.

-          Lower your exposure to newsfeeds to reduce stress.

-          Keep in contact with family and friends through phone and internet channels.

-          Limit tobacco and alcohol consumption.

-          Develop a hobby to remain busy.

-          Stay as positive as you can.

- Follow the government’s guidelines to stay safe.

Overall, staying healthy during a pandemic is not that difficult and entirely up to you. You can consume the extra time you have in improving yourself. There’s always a silver lining in the cloud and you have to find it.
