Democracy in Pakistan Essay

Democracy is a form of government where the people exercise power to influence decision-making. Pakistan is a democratic country and has been since its founding in 1947. Let’s explore the history and current state of democracy in Pakistan.

History of Democracy in Pakistan

After gaining independence from the British Empire, the new nation of Pakistan adopted a democratic system of government, with its first constitution written in 1956. This constitution was replaced by another one in 1962, which lasted until 1973 when it was suspended by military rule. This period was known as “The Martial Law” and lasted until General Zia-ul-Haq took power in 1977. Under his rule, Pakistan underwent a series of constitutional reforms culminating with the adoption a new Constitution in 1985. This Constitution declared that the president, elected by the National Assembly, would serve as Head of State while an elected Prime Minister would hold executive authority.

Current State of Democracy in Pakistan

Today, democracy is alive and well in Pakistan, with elections for national and regional governments occurring regularly since 1988. The current president is Arif Alvi, elected by a majority vote in 2018 and serves alongside Prime Minister Imran Khan, elected earlier the same year. The Parliament consists of two houses, National Assembly and Senate, with members from both elected on different terms and representing different constituencies within the country.

In addition to these governing bodies, civil society organizations play an important role in promoting democracy throughout the country. These organizations are often formed around specific issues or causes, such as human rights or environmental protection. They seek to raise awareness among citizens to better engage with politicians on these issues through public discourse or protest if necessary.

Final Words

Overall, democracy has been firmly entrenched in Pakistani culture since its founding over 70 years ago despite numerous internal conflicts and political turmoil over the years. Despite challenges arising due to different ideologies or regional divides, Pakistani citizens have remained loyal to democratic principles. They are enshrined within its Constitution and upheld by civil society organizations nationwide. With continued support from citizens, democracy will continue to thrive for many more generations to come!
